We recently had the opportunity to see a preview of the new film His Neighbor Phil. It tells the story of Harvey and Mary. Mary has early onset Alzheimer’s. The film portrays not only the impact that the disease has on the family, but also the impact it can have on friends and the community. What is especially wonderful about the film is that it also shows how that same family, friends and community can rally to help each other adjust and still find moments of joy.
The movie was filmed in Zumbrota Minnesota. The cast includes Stephanie Zimbalist (“Remington Steele”), Daniel Roebuck (“The Fugitive”), Ellen Dolan (“As The World Turns”) and Sally Kellerman (“M*A*S*H”). Two local first time film actors won major roles. Kristi Knudson plays Isabel, the daughter who still lives in town and helps her dad take care of Mom. Bob Bird plays the neighbor Phil.
While the film is still in postproduction, they hope to bring it to TV. It will also be used by various organizations who will have local showings around the country. It will be a very good movie to see by anyone touched by Alzheimer’s Disease. It will be especially helpful for people who are planning to work with families dealing with Alzheimer’s.
