Managing Diabetes, a Growing Issue In Our Older Population

Managing Diabetes Elderly Senior Citizens Burnsville MNYou maybe have heard that November is Diabetes Awareness Month.   According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 30 million Americans have diabetes and 1 in 4 do not know they have this disease.  The average medical expenditures for someone with diabetes is $13,700 annually.  More and more Americans are at risk.  In the last 20 years the number of people diagnosed with diabetes has tripled due to our aging population and more people being overweight.

Often we learn that our clients are on insulin or pills to manage their diabetes.  If the client is able to self-administer their insulin there are more options for senior living.  Yet, if they need help, not all senior living options are able to handle this care.    More and more senior living options are able to manage this condition because they see a growing need. Of course the costs of senior living are higher the more care that is needed.    And, if you or your loved one can self-administer now, will they be able to down the road?

Technology should improve in helping mange this condition. According to a study done by Grand View Research, Inc.  The diabetes devices market will grow to 35.5 billion by 2024.  To see the complete study go here.
