May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It is also the month that NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Health) is celebrating it’s 40th Anniversary. They are an organization that provides hundreds of free classes and presentations each year to educate people on mental health topics. They also offer over 70 support groups for families and friends of people living with mental health issues.
Education programs include topics for families of adults with mental illnesses, Parents of children with mental illnesses, specific communities including African American, American Indian, Latino and LGBTQ as well as youth and older adults. NAMI MN is instrumental in training our police officers about mental illness, which enables more people to obtain support with their illness versus ending up in prisons. NAMI is advocating for more support for mental illness in our schools, as we lag behind other states in this area.
